A eulogy is a speech given at a funeral or memorial service in memory of the deceased, as a respectful tribute.

You don’t have to be a great writer or orator to deliver a heartfelt and meaningful eulogy that captures the personality of the deceased.

It should be considered an honour that you have been asked to deliver the eulogy.  This honour comes with the responsibility of delivering memorable words, capturing the life of the deceased, giving comfort to others present and perhaps incorporating humour.

As well as an occasion for sorrow, a funeral can also be a celebration of a life.

The average eulogy is about 3 to 5 minutes long, which is sufficient time for you to give a meaningful speech about the deceased.  The eulogy does not have to be a biography of the deceased.

On the contrary, you shouldn’t attempt to sum up his/her entire life. The best eulogies are factual, honest, respectful and rich in anecdotes.

The person conducting the service can give you guidance as to the time frame available to you.  Remember that less is more, as you don’t want to try the patience of the audience during such a sad occasion.

If writing and delivering a Eulogy is too difficult or emotional for you at such a time, it is advisable to contact a celebrant who will be able to provide this service.
